The outpouring of love when Beyers Naude died last year was an eloquent testament to this remarkable man - a white Afrikaner who had grown up to believe in the political mission and racial destiny of his people to rule South Africa. Beyers Naude faithfully served his volk, advancing to the highest offices in the Dutch reformed church. But at the moment when honour and power were in his grasp, he drew back, believing that God had presented him with a greater challenge. Thus began his long struggle against the apartheid policies of his church and government. For his courage Beyers Naude was ostracised as a traitor, a sell-out of his people. He was banned for seven years, an experience he describes vividly in these pages. A pilgrimage of faith deals at length with Beyers Naude's part in the founding and history of the Christian institute; his response to the challenges to his work and thought presented by the emergence of the Black consciousness movement; and his involvement in the growing conflict between church and state in South Africa. The title concludes with Beyers Naude's re-emergence as an important church leader in South Africa after his unbanning in the mid-1980s.
