This text is one of the series of "Exeter French Texts" - works of the past which are of importance for their literary and historical value, but which have not been readily availabloe to scholars. The interest of "Ourika", first published in 1823, is in the quallity of its writing and of its analysis of a character suffering as a result of the inflexible tenets of the society of her time. Based on facts which occurred within the author's family, it is recognised as the best of the published novels of Madame de Duras, and was a best-seller of its time.
