Verna Wilkins is the author of 30 picture books and biographies for young people. Her books have featured on National Curriculum and BBC children's television, and been chosen among the Children's Books of the Year. She was born in Grenada and lives in London. From School Library Journal:
Kindergarten-Grade 2?When Dave sneezes, his loose tooth flies out of his mouth. He needs to find it because he wants to buy a new kite after receiving money from the Tooth Fairy. When his grandfather comes to stay, Dave finds Grandad's false teeth in a glass by the couch. He puts them under his pillow, to the horror of the Tooth Fairy, who cannot afford 32 teeth. She returns to Tooth Fairyland to replenish her funds. Meanwhile, Grandad has found Dave's missing tooth and puts it under his grandson's pillow, where he is surprised to see his dentures. The elderly man switches the teeth, the Tooth Fairy returns, and the child is happy to have the money for a kite. Meanwhile, the Tooth Fairy gets a new job selling kites, where she will have more contact with children. The pleasant illustrations depict smiling faces of African-American characters, including the life-sized Tooth Fairy. However, the story is not well developed, characterization is minimal, and the writing is merely adequate. Children deserve something more substantial to sink their teeth into. This lightweight title is not worth the price of purchase.
