This is a Spanish translation of a work on the Spanish drama of pathos which was first published in English in 1970. It surveys the dramatic aspect of Spain's movement towards modern thinking or "Enlightenment". The work falls into two volumes, the first of which evaluates the better-known authors - the scholar-dramatists - with special reference to their European context and to the Spanish activity of the period in translation, opera and parody. The second volume deals with the little-known playwrights who were, nevertheless, of great historical importance for their uninhibited development of foreign social theses, and for their initiative in experimenting in new dramatic methods.
