Wolverton Viaduct, Primrose Hill Tunnel, Tring and Blisworth cuttings were all obstacles, but the greatest challenge of all to Robert Stephenson's skill courage and perseverance was Kilsby Tunnel - more than a mile long through a hill whose centre consisted of quicksand fed by underground springs and a subterranean lake. It took thirteen pumps working night and day f nineteen months to staunch the quicksand. Robert Stephenson's reputation unjustly somewhat overshadowed by that of his father, George; Robert had all his father's energy and inventive flair, but also a more sophisticated intelligence deriving from his better education. In his teens Robert was placed by his father in sole charge of surveying and engineering a section Stockton and Darlington Railway. Soon afterwards he worked on the Liverpool and Manchester Railway and took charge of the world's first major locomotive works, in Newcastle. He worked for a while at some mines in Colombia the railways he engineered cover the length of Britain. The tubular bridges with which he spanned the Menai Straits and the river Conway on Chester - Holyhead line were a totally original solution to an intractable problem. Stephenson was buried in Westminster Abbey, and such was the esteem in which he was held that Queen Victoria permitted his funeral cortege to pass through Hyde Park, a rare privilege ## ### YOU MAY FIND THIS INFORMATION INTERESTING - Read on ## ## This is a new style of the Shire books, much more information, and the binding is in full colour glossy. The printing is much clearer on better quality paper, which will mean longevity in the years to come. Newer subjects and updated earlier Shire publications made it an exciting step forward. ## ### Shire Publications are a series of books that have grown from 32, 64 pages and more depending on the subject. These books offer a wealth of information, social history and local history, and other books that aren't available could be lost. New authors and new and varied subjects are always well written and researched. ## ## In 2007, the company was acquired by Oxford-based military history publisher Osprey and operated from Osprey's offices in Oxford. During 2008 Shire began a revamp of its list. Shire announced that several former Shire series: including Life Lines, Shire Garden History and History in Camera, would be absorbed into a new series called Shire Library. Retaining and expanding the numbering system used by the old album series, which has long formed the backbone of the Shire Library. Books in the Shire Library were to have a new series cover design, as would reissued books in the Archaeology and Egyptology series. Shire further announced that Shire's list of forthcoming publications would include an increased number of new titles, as well as reissues of out-of-print titles and new editions of existing titles. In December 2010, Osprey Publishing, along with all the Shire titles, was acquired by Bloomsbury Publishing. ## ### INTERNATIONAL BUYERS: Please Note. FREE SHIPPING IS UK ONLY.
