Shi Zhecun is a writer with a distinct voice in the history of contemporary Chinese literature. In the 1920s & 30s he was one of the most influential writers of the new consciousness school which was particularly concerned to describe objective reality through subjective emotion. He is the first Chinese writer to use psychoanalysis in his works. The stories collected in this volume reflect characteristics of his creative work and include descriptions of the bizarre and twisted psyche of contemporary urban dwellers, and a portrayal of an ancient monk who conceals waves of desire beneath an aloof & otherworldly appearance.
