'...what a joy to read! It took me back to my underegraduate days in the 1970s and reminded why the sociology of education became such a key part of my working life as an academic...the three basic sociological perspectives are introduced and illustrated, complexity and contradictions are identified, and the potential for redefinition or change established... good update of a classic text. I just wish it could return to being a standard text for trainee teachers.'--Sanford Lakoff "The L A Times Book Review " '...this is a good update of a classic text. I just wish it could return to being a standard text for trainee teachers.'--Sanford Lakoff "The Lecturer "
The fourth edition of this text retains much of the structure and content of the third edition, whilst benefiting from significant changes which take account of educational issues that have arisen in recent years. The text covers a wide range of topics clearly, and in depth, including: further education, home-based teaching, educational research and grading and examining. In line with current thinking, this edition places increased emphasis on educating outside and beyond the school, and pre-school. Every chapter ends with "signposts" which encourage students to pursue ideas and themes raised in the text, and the references and suggestions for further reading have been comprehensively updated and expanded to facilitate this.
