Reseña del editor:
Published in conjunction with a remarkable three-part exhibition of painting and sculpture from the collections of the alumni of Culver Academies, this book encompasses more than 150 years of American art. Divided into three sections, it contains 161 full-page color illustrations accompanied by curators' commentaries, including brief biographies of the artists and discussions of the works.
The section on art produced from the nineteenth century through the Second World War explores a variety of schools of American painting, including the Hudson River School, Luminism, American Impressionism, and Regionalism. Painters represented include such masters as Thomas Cole, Winslow Homer, Mary Cassatt, John Singer Sargent, Thomas Hart Benton, Edward Hopper and Georgia O'Keeffe.
The book's second section, which focuses on paintings of the western frontier, includes works that range from Charles Bird King's vivid portraits of American Indians to Albert Bierstadt's dramatic depictions of the unspoiled American wilderness. Other artists featured include Frederic Remington, Charles Marion Russell, and Thomas Moran.
The third section, on contemporary painting and sculpture, includes examples of art movements as diverse as abstract expressionism and pop art. Among the artists represented are Josef Albers, Mark Rothko, Adolph Gottlieb, Kenneth Noland, and Andy Warhol.
