Naturally illustrated history books do not purport to be definitive accounts of their subject(s). By definition they are rich in visual detail but not always hefty on text. This excellent Neil Young biography offers a detailed though potted history of the great man. Jimmy McDonough s scholarly work (Shakey) on Neil Young is justifiably claimed to be the major biography of the singer-songwriter but where this book scores high is with the archive material lots of pictures from his childhood, his influences, live shots, magazine covers, record covers, etc, etc. There is a handy discography which goes to show just how amazingly prolific he is from his work with Buffalo Springfield to CSNY and Crazy Horse and of course, his solo work. The authors have really done their research and are evidently huge fans though they cast doubts on some of his solo material. Don t forget that Young lost much of his appeal in the eighties with some experimental work...until he made a comeback with the brilliant album Freedom, and inspired by the grunge scene he used distortion and guitar feedback on the excellent Crazy Horse album Ragged Glory. From then onwards he seems to have done little wrong. It is not a cheap book - as hardback coffee table tomes rarely are - but if you re a fan you ll certainly want this in your music library. --Neildaniels dot com, March, 2010Reseña del editor:
Neil Young has been described as brilliant, cantankerous, enigmatic, and vexing. Regardless, his generation-spanning fan base and his profound musical influence cannot be denied. While a number of narrative titles have chronicled Neil Young in one manner or another, this is the first illustrated history to span his 41 studio albums, 6 live releases, and 40-plus years as a recording and touring musician. From Young's earliest days in the Canadian rock scene through his tenures with Buffalo Springfield and CSNY and on to his varied solo career, each aspect of the musician's career is covered. Photography from rock photographers of the 1960s to the present, as well as concert posters and memorabilia from around the world, are complemented by commentary from notable musicians around the world and a discography.
