Here is an unprecendented collection of the unique art that graced military aircraft in World War II and the Korean War. Applied by amateurs or professional artists like Vargas and Brinkman, the art typically featured alluring women whose charms belied the deadly cargo the crew hoped to deliver to its targets. Hundreds of examples are shown in a combination of archival photos from the wars and current photos of artwork in museum collections. Fully captioned with aircraft type and unit assignment. --Last gasp
A unique and interesting collection of color photos depicting a variety of warbird nose art. Over 1,000 wartime photos show art work close up, with explanations of art, aircraft, and pilots. --Inghram
The best source I have found on nose art. This is a "coffee table" book, but excellent source of nose art. It not only contains B-17 and B-24 art, but other bombers and fighters. It is focused almost exclusively on US art, however. Well worth while if you are interested in this subject --Metro east gaming
Phenomenal book for the ages. Valant does an incredible job not only preserving the rich history of WWII nose art, and whenever possible, he also list Bomb Groups and Squadrons to accompany the photographs. THIS IS A COLLECTION OF PHOTOGRAPHS, not a lot of written material on the history of WWII pinups. This is a great collection for the collector as it also has some pictures of the old A-2 Leather bombers with the pin-up art painted on them as well. Easily worth the money--Edwardo Acosta--Excelent monarge of vintage photos of aircraft & crews with jackets displaying art of the times. Full color photos. --Stanley Levinson --Great buy...this is the only book I have found that includes Ice Cold Katy in it....very hard nose art to find...buy it, you will love it. --J Mesker --I have always had a great interest in WWII bombers and fighters. In addition to this my, step-uncle was a 1st Lt. Co-pilot on a B-17 stationed in Deenethorpe, England and flew 30 missions between 6/44 & 11/44 in the 615th B.S. of the 401stBG (H). I purchased this book after reading the good reviews it had. I was very impressed with the book. There are B&W pictures of nose art on B-17's, B-24's, B-29's, B-26's, B-25's, A-26's, P-51's, C-47's, C-87's, P-38's, P-47's, P-61's. There are also some color pictures and also there are some pictures of the back of a few flight jackets. The pictures are 99% bombers. This is a picture book with info below the pictures if available. --S Whareley
This book celebrates the personalities and attitudes of the bomber crews that flew during WWII and the Korean War. A thousand B-17's rolled off the assembly lines...gleaming silver monsters identical in every way except for the identifying tail numbers. I think it's pretty hard for us to imagine what it must have been like to have been a crew member on one of those giants. Cramped, freezing cold at 25,000 feet, the uncertantiy of surviving the fighters and ground attacke...every plane in the cold, wet, miserable weather looking the same. The only way they could bring a little sanity into their lives was to create a personality for their aircraft which reflected the optimism, hope, and attitudes of those inside. The origin of 'Nose Art' goes way back to the days of the first personalized chariot making it distinguishable from the others, the desire to normalize an abnormal situation. The inspiration came from anywhere and everywhere, girlsfriends, wives, posters, calendars, and zodiac signs, comics, or even the history of the aircraft, anything to bring their aircraft much needed luck and determination in the quest to see out 25 missions before earning the right to be sent home..their mission complete. A fascinating mainly pictoral history of 'nose art' with hundreds of photographs of the men and their decorated flying machines. --Pinstriping UK, November 2008
