9780747813088: Fashion in the 1920s (Shire Library)

The 1920s ushered in drastic changes as fashion abruptly changes from the corseted world of the 1910s to rouge, flapper dresses, cigarette holders, Bobbed hair, rising hemlines and the "anything goes" attitude of the Roaring '20s! This is the birth of modern fashion, a hugely important milestone in fashion history, and this book deftly weaves the social history of the post-World War I generation alongside photographs and illustrations of the women's, men's and children's fashions and accessories which made the 1920s such an elegant and stylish time.

Excerpt from Fashion in 1920s Britain:

The idealized early-1920s image was one of modest, girlish femininity, the language of contemporary garment advertisements including the terms “dainty”, “pretty”, “becoming” and “picturesque”. However, the fashionable line rapidly grew narrower and straighter and increasingly obscured the contours of the female figure. The natural waistline lowered to a dropped waist, which shifted attention to the hips, the hip area of garments often accentuated further with a sash, embroidery or other ornamental detailing. Flat, straight dresses also offered a perfect canvas for artistic Art Deco motifs and consequently many striking materials were produced, using embroideries, appliqués and stylized floral or geometrically patterned prints. The new interest in printed textiles encouraged the creation of fabric designs to suit the shape of the finished garments, an idea deriving from Japanese kimonos that gave rise to some of the most ravishing dresses of the period. Oriental and other exotic influences were also evident in exclusive pieces designed and worn by the avant-garde, for example woven or embroidered garments incorporating Ancient Egyptian symbols. Meanwhile a more widespread interest in eastern European folk art inspired dresses and blouses ornamented with Russian-style embroidery or “peasant” features.

Descripción Bloomsbury Publishing PLC, United Kingdom, 2014. Paperback. Estado de conservación: New. Language: English . Brand New Book. The 1920s was a vibrant, energetic decade that bustled with jazz music, fast cars and glamorous movie stars. Fashion was at the forefront of this first true explosion of popular culture: bright young things donned short skirts and cloche hats, gents dressed in sharp tweed suits and spats, and even children s clothing was given a thorough overhaul. Jayne Shrimpton here explains the various elements that shaped British fashion in the 1920s, including the strong influences of Paris and Hollywood and looking not only at the clothes worn by the rich and famous but also at those of the common people - and at those who chose to dress conservatively in this age of anything goes .
