The spine is tight, and the inside is immaculate. ## ## Christmas Cards - This book traces the history of the Christmas card from its Victorian origins, through the Christmas postcards of the Edwardian era and the popular art of the inter-war period, up to e end of the Second World War. It illustrates examples of wide variety of Christmas cards from each decade and show ow to create your own collection of these colourful, miniature works of art. The first Christmas card appeared in 1843 but the idea did not catch on until almost twenty years later. The invention of the chromolithographic process and the introduction of comprehensive postal reforms sealed the success of the Christmas card. By the 1880s, sales were well into the millions per year an e Christmas card has retained its popularity ever since. ## ## Michelle Higgs is a history graduate and freelance writer specialising in history, heritage and leisure and has contribute to a wide range of publications. She is interested in all aspects of social history, particularly the Victorian and Edwardian eras, and her passion for Christmas cards began when she was given a Victorian Christmas card album as a gift. The printing is much clearer on better quality paper, which will mean longevity in the years to come. Newer subjects and updated earlier Shire publications made it an exciting step forward. ## ## In 2007, the company was acquired by Oxford-based military history publisher Osprey and operated from Osprey's offices in Oxford. During 2008 Shire began a revamp of its list. Shire announced that several former Shire series: including Lifelines, Shire Garden History and History in Camera, would be absorbed into a new series called Shire Library. Retaining and expanding the numbering system used by the old album series, which has long formed the backbone of the Shire Library. Books in the Shire Library were to have a new series cover design, as would reissued books in the Archaeology and Egyptology series. Shire further announced that Shire's list of forthcoming publications would include an increased number of new titles, as well as reissues of out-of-print titles and new editions of existing titles.
