He lived in Los Angeles in the sixties and worked a few years at Columbia Pictures while completing his baccalaureate in anthropology. A UCLA grant program led to a teaching career and a move to San Francisco in the early seventies. The writer has lived in Mexico and Europe, boated on the upper Amazon, survived hairpin mountain curves and precipices in the Caucasus, faced down a true-believing Intourist guide and paranoid young customs agents in the old Soviet Union. An extensive China trip included a long ride up the Yangtze. Interests include chamber music, dance theatre, and the nouvelle vague cinema.
