Article Title: aZiona provides look at early settlers of national park area
Author: Nicole Warburton
Date: 11/2/2008
Tiffany Taylor's new book, "Zion National Park," is not meant for readers curious only about the park's monuments, weather and topography.
Instead, the book is more likely to appeal to area residents and historians because it focuses on the lives of Zion's early pioneer settlers and visually chronicles how the park has changed over the past century.
At times, details in "Zion National Park" are a little muddy, but it's still an informative read. More than 200 black-and-white photographs dot the book's pages and showcase moments such as the construction of various trails, the park's dedication ceremony and also life on nearby farms.
Many of the images were by William L. Crawford, an avid photographer who lived and farmed near Zion during the early 1900s. Other pictures were taken by people like Denise H. Williams and Flora Anderson, who had family ties to the park.
The author also contributed some of her own images to the book. She grew up in Orem, and her grandfather was a seasonal park ranger at Zion.
Copies of "Zion National Park" will be sold beginning Monday. The book can be obtained online, at local bookstores, or through Arcadia Publishing at arcadiapublishing.com. It is part of an ongoing series by Arcadia titled "Images of America" and comes with a set of 15 postcards featuring images from the book.

Title: Author of new Zion book available to meet

A new book on Zion National Park featuring over 200 historical photographs has been selling well at a Springdale bookstore and anyone interested in meeting the author will have the chance tonight.
The book, called Zion National Park by Tiffany Taylor, covers the history of the park from the park's earliest Native American inhabitants through World War II.
Therese Feinauer, owner of Sundancer Books, LLC. said many local residents have been purchasing the book, which is the first book with that number of photographs from both private and public collections.
Feinauer said the book is a great compliment to the park's centennial which is next year.
"A lot of (people) locally are purchasing it for their kids or grandkids," she said. "What's really neat about it is you have this collection of historical photographs for yourself."
Taylor is a Utah native, received a history degree from Brigham Young University and is a graduate student in the historical administration program at Eastern Illinois University in Charleston.
Taylor's book, by Arcadia Publishing which specializes in local history books, is dedicated to her grandfather, Hal. L. Taylor, who was a seasonal park ranger at Zion National Park.
Feinauer said Taylor also had a great aunt, Elsa Ruesch, who was the secretary to one of the park's superintendents.
Some of the images in the book were provided by local residents J.L. Crawford and Nellie Ballard.
In the book, part of the Images of America series, there is a group of 15 postcards. The Postcards of America series, are also available for sale.
Taylor will be at Sundancer Books this evening from 5 to 7 p.m. for a book signing.
Sundancer Books is located at 975 Zion Park Boulevard, Springdale. For more information, contact the book store at 772-3400.
On July 31, 1909, Pres. William Howard Taft authorized the creation of Mukuntuweap National Monument in southern Utah. Encompassing miles of rugged mountain peaks towering above the Virgin River, the national monument was renamed Zion and designated as a national park in 1919. The area, originally inhabited by Native Americans, was settled by Mormon pioneers in the early 1860s. As the beauty of the region gained national fame, roads were constructed, tourist accommodations were established, and from 1927 to 1930, the Zion-Mount Carmel Tunnel, a 5,613-foot-long engineering wonder, was constructed. Recognized around the world for its geologic, scenic, and historic value, Zion, Utah's first national park, draws millions of visitors each year.
