"All collectors will welcome the meticulous documentation of recording dates, titles, and personnel . . . a valuable addition to jazz criticism, discography and . . . historiography." Popular Music "The Mona Lisa of its genre. To the initiate and novice alike, it provides an enlightened and enlightening overview of the music it surveys. . . . One looks forward to a sequel of like strengths. . . . this book stands on its own as one of the handful in the literature of jazz that can truly be called essential." Annual Review of Jazz Studies "An immense body of information is packed into the volume, the writing is lucid, literate, and frequently a joy to read, and the discussion builds on itself . . . nothing approaching the compass, balance, and erudition of this volume has been produced this side of the [Atlantic] ocean." Downbeat
First published in 1984 and reissued to coincide withthe publication of the second volume, this selection of the 250 best jazz records traces the earliest roots of the music to the beginnings of the modern jazz era. Volume One's focus is on LP collections of 78 rpm originals and nearly every significant musician--both familiar and obscure--of early 20th-century jazz is listed. For each record listed, full details of personnel, recording dates and locations are provided.

Soft cover. Condición: USED_NEARFINE. No Jacket. Two faint reading creases to spine of this otherwise pristine (unread) hefty trade paperback, call it "near-fine." Published in the Year 2000 (although this text originally copyright 1984.) Brief preface to the 1999 reprint explains the recordings are still referred to here by their shellac or vinyl record numbers, as adding the numbers of the numerous CD reissues was judged to be "a nightmare and an unending task." Starts with the pre-1920 and 1920s precursors including the Savannah Syncopators and numerous jug bands and piano rags. The short final chapter is called "The Transition to Modern Jazz," featuring "Hot Lips" Page, Red Norvo with Charles Mingus, Roy Eldridge, Charlie Parker, etc. (The modern bop era to be forthcoming in Vol. II.) 595 pp. including Index. Reduced from $70. Nº de ref. del artículo: 011926
