Descripción Hard Covers. Condición: VG. No Jacket. Photos Ilustrador. 1st. Sub-titled "British Battleships at War 1939-45" Peter Smith here reviews this final era of the battleships and battlecruisers that had been the epitome of the RN for many decades through the steam age. He follows the fights, fortunes and misfortunes of the RN capital ships involved in WWII. Many of these were already obsolete, but were refitted and modernised in an effort to update them to meet a different war than they were designed for. The few modern capital ships that joined the fleet immediately before and during the conflict achieved some successes, but were also facing a degree of obsolesence owing to the emergence of aircraft carriers as the new capital ship. The author has produced a graphic record of the final days of these "great ships." This copy ex-library, first edition of 1977. 544 pages including acknowledgements, notes and sources, four appendices and index, 40 b/w photos.
