Review:

From the Introduction

I first started doing research around six years ago on tranquil places for Quiet London, the first illustrated guide to places to eat, drink, read, wander and browse in the capital. From the moment it was published, this small book was appreciated by many readers. It seemed that a few people not only bought the guide for themselves, but also for close friends as a way of saying, ‘I am giving you some quiet time – implicit permission to find tranquil moments in your life. ’ This was very encouraging, as was the fact that when I contacted the meditation centres, bookshops, cafés and libraries to ask if they wanted to be included in the new Quiet London books, people welcomed me with open arms. This was a wonderful opportunity to meet my readers and we talked enthusiastically about our favourite quiet places. Starting to do research for three new Quiet London books on Culture, Quiet Corners and Food & Drink, I realised that discovering calm, peaceful places was not just about avoiding city noise and anonymous crowds but about finding beautiful, serene locations which would also make people feel happy. I only shot photographs in the daytime, but I wanted to come back for the ‘Midnight Apothecary’ in the pretty Brunel Museum garden, to drink blackberry Martinis surrounded by tall sunflowers after dark. As someone who loves the excitement of visiting exhibitions and going to concerts, I also knew that there were times when I needed to seek out a small garden or a quiet library just for the pleasure of being alone with my thoughts. Just before setting up my tripod, I could sit in ancient chapels, listening to the closest thing to silence, surrounded by dark wooden pews and the carved effigies of people who were alive when the church was newly built. St Margaret Lothbury at dusk was an especially calm place, where it seemed time was suspended inside these ancient walls, with only pale candle flames to soften the slowly fading light. Not advertised on billboards, not part of a ‘special offer’, not clamouring for attention on social media, such rare moments of unhurried, gradual wonder are open not only to me, but to anyone who enters this hallowed building.

Recent research suggests that people’s mental health can be considerably improved if they walk among trees. Children also develop better cognitive function and emotional maturity if they can play in parks and woodland, partly because these are imaginative spaces to run around and enact stories in – healthy ways to integrate growing limbs with developing brains. So this book is not just for sedentary adults, who find it hard to entice each other away from digital screens. It is also for children, who need to discover the pleasure of running among undergrowth, dipping sticks in ponds and unexpectedly catching sight of a roe deer in a clearing. In his book Feral: Searching for Enchantment on the Frontiers of Rewilding, George Monbiot wrote about his longing to see primary schools take their pupils ‘for one afternoon a week, to run wild in the woods’. He claimed that there isn’t enough woodland in urban areas to make this happen, but I think in London there may be more wild spaces than he imagines. ..With more than 8 million people living in Greater London (according to the 2011 census), and a few million more travelling into the city to work each day, it would seem impossible to find some quiet respite and time away from the demands of others. In 1981, when I first arrived in London, there were around 2 million fewer people living here; in six years’ time, it is expected that the numbers will rise to 9 million. At first glance there seem to be few hidden, private corners in this sprawling, unrelentingly busy city. However, with an unremitting desire to seek out tranquil places wherever they may be, I opened doors that might otherwise have remained closed and quietly followed well-worn, but less well-known, footpaths. I was inspired by what I saw. One afternoon I came across Octavia’s Orchard: mini portable gardens placed around the South Bank complex for a few weeks in the summer of 2013. Inspired by the ideas of the nineteenth-century reformer Octavia Hill, these diminutive meadows were intended to highlight the lack of access to green spaces in built-up areas. On one of the containers was written a question by Octavia Hill: ‘Does it not seem that the quiet influence of nature is more restful to Londoners than anything else?’ . ..
