In Duerme, the main character, Claire, is a European woman traveling through the New World. She dresses and lives like a man, regardless of the risks she faces in these recently discovered lands. While Spaniards try to impose their culture and religion to the Indians, Claire divests herself of her personalities when the situation requires it, sometimes to her detriment.
Carmen Boullosa recreates the colonial world and the merging of two cultures in a novel full of adventures and historical references.
