Prenant mon courage à deux mains, j'ai fermé les yeux. Et c'est arrivé, comme toujours au cours des cinq dernières années. J'ai vu les premières flammes sortir du moteur et venir lécher le pare-brise. J'ai passé la vitesse inférieure dans le virage, luttant pour maintenir le volant. Le grand mur est arrivé droit sur moi et nous nous sommes rentrés dedans à deux cent vingt à l'heure. Mon engin a piqué du nez et est resté un instant immobile tandis que je regardais les tribunes où, d'un seul coup, tout était vacarme et chaos. Puis les flammes m'ont atteint, et nous avons basculé par-dessus le mur. J'ai eu soudain dans les narines l'odeur douce et écœurante de ma chair brûlée et de mes cheveux roussis. Très loin, je m'entendais crier. J'ai ouvert les yeux et ça a cessé. Je trempais de nouveau dans ma baignoire et le Jaccuzi continuait à agiter l'eau avec son bourdonnement apaisant. Lentement j'ai refermé les yeux. Cette fois, ça a marché : je flottais dans l'eau.
Biographie de l'auteur
Born in New York in 1916, Harold Robbins grew up during the Depression. He left school at fifteen-and-a-half to go to work, and by the time he was twenty-one had made his first fortune and lost it. When he was thirty, Harold Robbins began to write. NEVER LOVE A STRANGER became an immediate bestseller. He then became the world's bestselling writer, many of his novels were filmed, and his books translated into almost every language. He died in 1998.
