The Arthashastra was one of the earliest books on the subject of political economy, and explained the art of creating and preserving wealth and other such economic concepts. The book also talks about leadership, and puts down the doctrine that a king must practice in his personal life, and while discharging his official duties in order to be an effective ruler. Thomas R. Trautmann is an author who is known for his books on ancient India. He works at the University of Michigan, where he serves as the Professor Emeritus in the subjects of history and anthropology. Some of the books that he has written on ancient and colonial India are Kautilya And The Arthashastra, Aryans and British India, The Aryan Debate, India: Brief History of a Civilization, and The Madras School of Orientalism. Gurcharan Das is also a famous writer and has authored several books. He is a known commentator too. He is the author of books like India Unbound, The Difficulty of Being Good: On The Subtle Art of Dharma, A Fine Family: A Novel, The East India Company: The World's Most Powerful Corporation, and Merchants of Tamilakam: Pioneers of International Trade.
