This book is a report from the members of the working group set up by the National Institutes of Health to analyze and evaluate the effectiveness of all diagnostic techniques for acute myocardial ischemia and infarction in the Emergency Room. This group was formed from the National Heart Attack Alert Program (NHAAP) and enlisted the help of 39 professional organizations.

Acute myocardial infarction is the most common cause of death in the United States. Although significant progress has been made in reducing the devastating impact of AMI, the need for a concerted effort to reduce the mortality rates from AMI and acute cardiac ischemia (ACI) led to the creation of the National Heart Attack Alert Program, under the auspices of the National Institutes of Health.
