Descripción Hardcover. Condición: Very Good. No Jacket. ### The Amateur Gardener by A G L Hellyer 1972 ## ### THIS BOOK: Classified as VERY GOOD, this is the 1972 Edition. First published in 1948. Binding is a dark yellow linen, title is on the spine, it does show some shelf wear but no bumping or foxing. ## ## As a gardener, I see how clearly the instructions have been written, step by step and not technical mumbo jumbo. All images are clean and clear and images and drawings in black and white. Not just plants but instructions on greenhouse building and ponds etc, a marvelous book and no matter what size your garden is, all will apply, either condensed or expanded. Brilliant book. ## ## The Amateur Gardener has been written to provide in one not too ponderous volume sufficient groundwork of information about the different aspects of gardening in Britain to meet most of the everyday needs of ordinary, non-specialist gardeners. For this reason I have divided it into six main sections for easy reference, as I do not visualise anyone reading the book from cover to cover but rather dipping into it at whatever point is of immediate interest and perhaps returning to those same pages later with the added insight provided by some practical experience in the garden. For the same reason each chapter deals with a clearly defined subject which I hope will make quick reference easy, but in case of difficulty there is also a comprehensive index to guide the reader wherever necessary. ## ## In any comprehensive book about gardening some technicalities are unavoidable, but I have tried to keep these to a minimum and explain them whenever it appeared necessary. For some plants botanical names must be used if only because these are the ones in general use in catalogues, nurseries and garden shops. The trouble with so-called 'common' names is that a good many are anything but common and only lead to confusion if one attempts to use them. Fortunately a great many botanical names have already passed comfortably into the English language so that today delphinium, chrysanthemum, begonia, gladiolus, dahlia, antirrhinum, petunia and rhododendron, all of which are botanical names, seem as natural to most people as rose, forget-me-not and wallflower which are genuinely vernacular. ## ## The least attractive part of gardening is the control of weeds, pests and diseases. Fortunately this has been made much easier by the introduction of herbicides, pesticides and fungicides, which are not only more efficient than those formerly used but a great deal safer. I am often horrified to remember the unwitting risks which we ran years ago in using chemicals such as nicotine and arsenate of lead with little knowledge and few safety precautions. Today highly dangerous chemicals such as these cannot be sold to amateur gardeners t## #### INTERNATIONAL BUYERS: Please Note. FREE SHIPPING IS UK ONLY.
