These sorts of arrangements are all the rage now, particularly with choirs looking for showstoppers for their own Last Choir Standing sort of programmes, and Faber jumps aboard the bandwagon here with its beautifully produced Choral Programme Series, edited by Simon Halsey. Gwyn Arch has produced some excellent arrangements in the past and these three - All The Things You Are, Moonglow and You are the Sunshine of my Life - are no exception. The first page offers some brief but welcome notes on each piece and an introduction to the 'vocal jazz' style in which these pieces are written. It's a style that has to be very tight to work well, and these pieces will require medium-standard choirs to be at the top of their game to pull them off. The notes, by and large, are pretty straightforward; it is the rhythms that will catch singers out and will need careful work, particularly the offbeat lines in You are the Sunshine. Having said that, it's worth it. The piano parts are a pleasure to play, if not the easiest on the music shelf, and these are slick, entertaining arrangements. I particularly liked the quotation from Au clair de la lune that frames Moonglow. Good fun for all here. Music Teacher, September 2008
All The Things You Are: Three Jazz Classics is an exciting collection of three jazz standards - All the things you are, Moonglow and You are the sunshine of my life - all brilliantly arranged in a vocal cabaret style for accompanied SSA choir by Gwyn Arch. This volume will be a hit with choirs and audiences alike. The Choral Programme Series is now a well-established programming tool for many choirs as it offers a wealth of fresh material from many eras and in many styles. Also offering great value for money as each volume in the series provides up to forty minutes of music.
