Her objections are based on more than prejudice; Will has Down's Syndrome, although he doesn't appear so because his features were cosmetically corrected at birth. His secret isn't revealed to the reader until the end of the book, so Will is seen as a 'normal' character throughout with the same thoughts and feelings as any other teenager. As this complex web of family secrecy begins to unravel, Will and Zara's love develops into something strong enough to survive - no matter who might stand in judgement against them.
Jeanne Willis was born in St Albans. She has always wanted to be a children's author, and she spent her childhood writing and designing comics for her neighbours. Her first book was accepted when she was 21, and it established her career as a successful writer. She has had over 30 children's books published, for all age groups, including poetry. Her first novel for Faber, The Hard Man of the Swings, won the North East Book Award. She is married with two children, and lives in North London.
