Descripción Hard Cover. Condición: Very Good. Estado de la sobrecubierta: Very Good. First Edition. Essays and Studies by IAN RICHMOND Edited by Peter Salway, Fellow of All Souls College, Oxford. The sudden death in October 1965 of Sir Ian Richmond, Professor of the Archaeology of the Roman Empire at Oxford and President of the Society of Antiquaries, not only deprived Roman archaeology of one of its leading exponents but also left unfinished a number of important projects. Several of these are now being completed by other hands. Among the papers bequeathed to the Haverfield Library of the Ashmolean Museum, Oxford, were the manuscripts and typescripts of lectures and essays-some of which Richmond had hoped one day to prepare for publication. The present volume is a collection of the bulk of those whose text can be recovered, with the addition of footnotes (which were almost entirely lacking) and some illustrations. The editor is Dr Peter Salway, author of The Frontier People of Roman Britain, whose interests particularly lie in the region where ancient history and classical archaeology interact. He has disentangled the much-corrected originals to produce a text; and in the footnotes he has attempted to relate more recent discoveries and ideas to Richmond's thought, inevitably sometimes disagreeing with him. The essays range widely over Roman Britain, the archaeology and art of the Roman Empire at large and aspects of Roman thought; and they display, in Richmond's characteristic style, his acute perception and sympathy with the ancient world.
