It is not possible to claim absolute authenticity of detail in the less important facts. In not a few cases, such detailed information has been lost, or if found would in no wise enhance either the interest or the value of the personality. In the preparation of our work, we have not only searched general andS tate histories, county histories where they could be found, biographies, and family genealogies, but have corresponded directly with descendants of a majority of the notable women whose lives are here recorded.
