But it is not so easy to understand why the history of political theories has attracted but little attention. But with all the devotion of their scholars to historical research, especially in the last quarter of a century, there has been no serious attempt to trace out, in origin and development, the life of these ideas in the broad field of the worlds progress. Englishspeaking students have indeed discarded the longprevalent notion that little worthy of scholarly historical investigation ever happened in political life or thought prior to the Reformation or outside the circle of so-called A nglo-S axon interests.
