Descripción Hardcover. Condición: Good. First Edition. From Booklist Gr. 9-12. Have women finally achieved success and acceptance in the medical field? Not according to Garza, whose research points to ancient Mesopotamia and a few other early societies as better climates for female healers. In later centuries, women who attempted to care for the sick were persecuted relentlessly as witches. Even midwives were hounded out of practice through the years. With regular medical schools closed to them, women struggled to establish and maintain female medical colleges. As they were gradually accepted at men's universities, women still faced obstacles landing internships and jobs. The picture may be less bleak today, but it is far from satisfactory. For example, according to Garza, women make up only 18 percent of practicing physicians. Her account is a passionate call for sex equality in the medical field. Oddly omitting Clara Barton but giving Florence Nightingale ample coverage, Garza covers nursing and other nonphysician medical fields. Part of the new Women Then--Women Now series, this is a strong title in social and occupational history that students will find useful for projects, statistics, and reports. Source notes; bibliography. Anne O'Malley Product Description Looks at the history of women in medicine, describes how male doctors tried to ban women from the profession, and looks at the status of women in the medical professions today.
