The curious blend of Eastern and Western elements turns these stories into extraordinarily bizarre and beautiful tales. Collected in the 19th century and first published in 1889, these Turkish stories are reminiscient sometimes of the tales of the Arabian Nights and sometimes of the tales of the Brothers Grimm. They often contain less familiar Slavonic, Persian and Semitic elements. The seventeen tales from Asia Minor are followed in this book by four more stories from the Roumanian tradition. This book was compiled at a time when Turkey's ancient oral tradition was still very much alive, and it remains an important work in the history of folklore.
