Research in the area of suicidology has expanded substantially since 1990 and has provided fresh insights in, for example, epidemiological, psychopathological and biological characteristics of suicidal behaviour. Other areas of research have focused on the efficacy of the treatment and prevention of suicidal behaviour, and in a limited number of countries, national prevention programmes have been developed.
