In contemporary Britain, race and ethnic origin are highly charged and politicized issues. Based on empirical material from the authors' research in Birmingham, this text examines the impact of race in British society, and analyzes the changing role and importance of race as a social category. The research which informs the book is the result of five years probing into the political and social impact of racial issues in British society and, for comparative purposes, into the role of race in the political life of the USA. It is an up-to-date account of key issues in British social and political life, focusing especially on the changing political influence which racial issues have had. The emergence of new political forces and movements, and the responses of the established political parties to these movements, are scrutinized.
