Expert systems are sophisticated computer applications that contain representations of human expertise. They can apply this knowledge to solve problems and offer advice much as a human expert does, through interactive dialogue with non-experts. The systems offer explanations of the lines of reasoning they explore and of the conclusions they reach. The authors of this book have developed the first such expert system, called the Latent Damage System, to be built in the United Kingdom for lawyers and other advisors in professional practice.
