A brief history and travel guide to Jersey, Guernsey, Alderney, Sark, etc., illustrated with color photographs. One wonders if the section on "island fare" has done its assigned duty of keeping the crowds away. Mussels, lobster, and crab are now in such short supply that they have to be imported -- some from as far away as Canada -- we're informed. But if you're willing to make do with eels and limpets and anything that can be made from apples -- including "black butter" -- you should be fine. Except perhaps on the island of Herm, where, "even when the food is disappointing, the waiter is sure to be servility personified."
