This is a practical text aimed at new entrants and experienced teachers who are involved in pastoral work with students aged 11-18, in mainstream education. The basic listening and responding skills are described with examples relevant to a school setting. Practical matters are considered such as how the helping interview is conducted, what to do and what not to do. Issues such as professional boundaries, role conflict, self disclosure, levels of competence, support, referring on, need for self awareness and cross cultural awareness are discussed. Teachers' legal responsibilities with respect to confidentiality, sex education and the Children Act are also included. A clear distinction is made between counselling and the use of counselling skills. Practical suggestions are made with respect to how to recognize and deal with specific problems using counselling skills. Information is given about resources and further reading.
