This book is about contemporary British political parties, what they stand for, whom they represent, how they are organised, how they compete for power and how they use such power as they obtain. In addition to chapters on the Conservative and Labour Parties, the book has individual chapters on the Liberal, Scottish National and Welsh National Parties as well as a chapter each on the extra-parlimentary parties: the Marxist left and the National Front. The party line-up in Northern Ireland is also outlined. While the Labour and Conservative Parties remain very much larger than the others, the old system of two-party competition has been undermined.
