9780330523646: Seeing Voices: A Journey Into the World of the Deaf

'Seeing Voices is both a history of the deaf and an account of the development of an extraordinary and expressive language' Evening Standard Imaginative and insightful, Seeing Voices offers a way into a world that is, for many people, alien and unfamiliar -- for to be profoundly deaf is not just to live in a world of silence, but also to live in a world where the visual is paramount. In this remarkable book, Oliver Sacks explores the consequences of this, including the different ways in which the deaf and the hearing learn to categorize their respective worlds -- and how they convey and communicate those experiences to others. 'Seeing Voices is a manifesto, characteristically humane and impassioned; once more, Sacks proves he is the doyen of science with a human face' Sunday Times 'Empathetic, intelligent and compassionate' Guardian 'Scholarly and carefully documented, Seeing Voices makes the gigantic leap so essential to understanding total deafness' Sunday Telegraph 'A passionate meditation on the richness of sign language' Independent

From the Inside Flap:

"This book will shake your preconceptions about the deaf, about language and about thought--. Sacks [is] one of the finest and most thoughtful writers of our time."--"Los Angeles Times Book Review
Like The Man Who Mistook His Wife for a Hat, this is a fascinating voyage into a strange and wonderful land, a provocative meditation on communication, biology, adaptation, and culture. In Seeing Voices, Oliver Sacks turns his attention to the subject of deafness, and the result is a deeply felt portrait of a minority struggling for recognition and respect--a minority with its own rich, sometimes astonishing, culture and unique visual language, an extraordinary mode of communication that tells us much about the basis of language in hearing people as well. Seeing Voices is, as Studs Terkel has written, "an exquisite, as well as revelatory, work."

Descripción Picador, 2012. Estado de conservación: New. A physician, professor of neurology and author, Oliver Sacks (1933-2015) has been described by the New York Times as 'a kind of poet laureate of contemporary medicine'. His books are made up of case histories of his patients, and explore both their neurological disorders and the strategies they adopted to cope with them. In Seeing Voices, a journey into the world of the profoundly deaf, Sacks examines the consequences of living in silence, including the different ways in which the deaf and the hearing learn to categorize and convey the experience of their respective worlds.
