In the middle of 1940, Sally Bowles, that lively, loveable and eccentric character from Christopher Isherwood's GOODBYE TO BERLIN, decides to leave her newly born baby daughter with her parents in the country, and return to London. There, despite the blitz, the bombs, and the mayhem, she is determined to live life to the full. Moreover, she wants to find the love of her life, the beautiful but elusive Theo. Many of Theo's friends despise Sally, and cannot believe that he could possibly be the father of her child. Yet despite Theo's absence, Sally cuts swathes across the cold, charmless and secretive trio of Briggs, Pym and Bruno, setting herself up in their flat and conducting a career as both a cabaret singer and a postman regardless of their resentments or dislikes.

Now, in the late 1990s, young American academic Greg Peters is trying to piece together the missing links of Sally's life for a new biography he has been commissioned to write. He contacts Bruno in London, and finds a man tauntingly evasive, knowldgeable but unwilling to comment. But as time goes, Bruno thaws, leading Greg on a fascinating and tantalising trail of snippets, facts and fantasies about the real Sally Bowles ...
