\"It all began the day my mother picked up up at Breezy Point Farms and introduced us to our 'new daddy', Vernon Presley. Mom and Vernon then packed our bags, put us in a black Lincoln limousine, and we started on the long drive from Virginia to Memphis, Tennessee. Mom made a big fuss over us and, along the way, she and Vernon told us about the mansion that was to be our home. Vernon talked even more about his son, Elvis, who was a famous singer and entertainer.... \"When we walked in Elvis had his back to us, and for an instant we were scared... But when he turned to meet us he laughed. He immediately lifted the three of us up in one embrace and said to Vernon, \"Daddy, I've always wanted a little brother. And now I have three.\" Billy Stanley, age seven, 1960.

Poor Elvis. Twelve years after his death the insatiable pop-culture craving for gossip and anecdotes about his life remains unabated. At last count, the most recent Subject Guide to Books in Print listed over 60 Elvis titles written by biographers, friends, lovers, psychics, and family members. This latest addition to the burgeoning bibliography of Presleyana is Stanley's story of his 17 years (1960-77) as Elvis's stepbrother and, later, personal aide. Stanley collaborated with his brothers and mother in 1979 on Elvis, We Love You Tender ( LJ 1/15/80) and not much has changed since. Elvis's manifold affairs, drug abuse, religious mysticism, and generosity have been well documented and Stanley, who states up front that his "love for Elvis was unconditional," has few new revelations. The style is often clunky and awkward. Marginally recommended wherever Elvis fans are legion.
