In the beginning of my researches which ultimately led to the production of this volume, 1 had no thought of attempting to write a general genealogy of the Fairbanks Family. My purpose was to study, in a superficial way, the history of the early families, and, particularly, to trace my own lineage. Proceeding with this end in view, my investigations very soon naturally took a wider range, and were continued, with a constantly increasing interest in the subject, till I had practically laid the foundation of the more ambitious project upon which I finally entered with more courage than foresight.
