A la diflérence de beaucoup d'artistes frottés aux hautes classes, aucune mrcvrerie n'amollit celui - ci Z orn reste toujours un paysan aux bras musclés, pour étreindre la réalité nue. Il s'est créé, presque tout de suite, un métier extraordinaire de spontanéité et de crânerie; il attaque sa toile au pinceau, sans crayonnage préalable, quelque ébauche peinte lui donnant, tout au plus, les tons et les valeurs. S'il lui arrive de des siner un mouvement complexe, un raccourci difficile, le croquis, une fois arrêté, est jeté au rebut, la pose étant, dès lors, fixée dans son cerveau. Et le voilà, d'un élan furieux, sabrant ses formes de grandes zébrures brutales, mais d'une tonalité si juste, de rapports si exacts, qu'à la dis tance voulue, tout se marie, s'accorde, se fond en flnesses délicieuses, en molles rondeurs frôlées de reflets et animées de frissons. Les nus sont admirables de plénitude, les attaches robustes y jouent sous le flexible satin de l'épiderme, l'armature solide, massive même, parfois, s'y revêt de tissus tendres aux ondulations fuyantes, aux plans invisibles. Une sensualité ardente se dégage de ces morceaux, mais franche et saine, sans nul sous - entendu risqué. L'argile idéale a dans notre peintre un adorateur extasié, doublé, et ses heures, d'un maître impérieux mais, qu'il la caresse ou la pétrisse, il en respecte le moule divin et l'anguste fonction.
