In April 1917 I presented to the Faculty of Princeton University a portion of these studies as a dissertation in candidacy for the degree of Doctor of Philosophy. The dissertation was en titled An Introductory Study of Hume's Dialogues concerning Natural Religion, and comprised Chapters XI, XII, and XIII of this book, together with the sections from Chapter II dealing with Cicero, Bayle, Francis Bacon, Berkeley, and Malebranche (pp. 31-57) which followed immediately after the discussion of Part One of the Dialogues (p.
