IN these Lectures, I have tried to present the outline of a great subject which, indeed, cannot be otherwise than unworthily presented. How ever, I have worked at it diligently, and I trust not altogether unsuccessfully, or else neither Should I have ventured to bring it under the consideration of the audience before which the Lectures were delivered, nor would I now ask for it a larger attention than that which it has already received.
