Excerpt from The Miracle Play in England: An Account of the Early Religious Drama
While not altogether neglecting the literary and dramatic features of the Miracle Plays, it has rather been my endeavour to give an account of the manner in which the people at large entered into the spirit of the performances, and to tell how they presented and embellished their plays.
If I succeed in conveying to those who read these pages some idea of what these Miracle Plays really were in matter and in representation, and in thereby indicating the extent to which they influenced the life of the people, in which they were so great an element, I shall be content.
