IN common with practically every industry Electrical Engineering has become the centre of a wide and increasing circle of allied trades, of which probably the majority are connected in some way or another with its Power and Traction branches. To the members of such trades and callings, to whom some knowledge of applied Electrical Engineering is desirable if not strictly essential, this book is particularly intended to appeal. It may also be useful to the student as it covers with but small exception purely practical ground, and enters to some extent into those commercial considerations which in the long run must overrule all others.

For obvious reasons it is impossible to incorporate in one volume the whole theory and practice of a subject so far reaching as Electric Power and Traction; it therefore becomes necessary at the outset to credit the reader with a certain amount of scientific and technical knowledge: to fix the standard, let us say, such as should naturally have been acquired by observation in the practice of an allied trade and by general reading in an age that is essentially electric.
