Of many who know only, that they filled elevated fituationa, that they compofed fplendid works, made important dilbove ries, died in a particular year, and were at length interred in fome venerable repofitory of the dead.

An aimual publication like the prefent will belt provide againft a future deficiency of this kind, with regard to the difiinguilhed perfonages who now fill up the drama of pub lic life in the Britifh empire. The Editors are not like ly to commit themfelves, and the reputation of their work, by inferring dirca falfehoods, or partial mif reprefentations: no character, of whom they now or may hereafter treat, can be thought infenfible to the love of contemporary or pofihumous fame; hence, fhould any andeli gned error, or any inaccurate flatement, inadver tently efcape them, it may be rationally prefumed, that the party affected, from a regard to his own reputation, will take the earliefi opportunity to correa fuch mif tatements; or that fome friend, intimately acquainted with the fubjeél, in the candour and warmth of efieem, may be {timulated to write a more particular and accurate account, for a fubfequent edition.
