This reverses the natural order of learning. Out of the school we strive to comprehend first, and then memorize. We first try to understand the directions given to us, and then fix them in the memory. But in school we encourage the child to memorize first and understand afterward. We argue that the raw materials in the form of memories will supply a leaven which will ferment at the proper time into the finished products of judgment and understand ing. But frequently the pupils have so much to learn that they never have time to think or under stand.
