Paperback. Condición: New. Print on Demand. The author, a well-known historian and philosopher, provides a detailed history of women's lives and treatment across various regions of the world as recorded in ancient texts, historical accounts, and the observations of explorers and anthropologists up to the early 19th century. Organised regionally, this book begins by examining the lives of women among the indigenous peoples of Siberia and the Americas, revealing the harsh conditions they faced and the often brutal treatment they endured at the hands of their male counterparts. Striking parallels are drawn to the conditions women endured in Mongol-based societies, with some societies treating women as inferior beings no better than 'domestic animals who could be used or abused at will.' The author notes that the treatment of women was at its worst in tribes where men were at their most idle, indolent and unfeeling. The book then turns its attention to Africa, dividing the continent into its distinctly different black and white populations. The former, the author suggests, have not only darker skin but also differ greatly from white Africans in their physical characteristics and societal organisation. Among these dark-skinned Africans, the author observes similar patterns of extreme female subjugation and oppression that were seen in both the Americas and among the Mongol tribes of Asia.
