It is painted upon a very dark and shadowy background, from which the face and some soft folds of white drapery stand out with a weird unearthly light. The picture must be a good one, if only for the intensity of expression which the painter has thrown into the youthful face, and the vivid, almost transparent brightness of its pallor. The figure seems to be pausing at the head of a flight of stone stairs, one foot advanced to descend; one delicate hand draws a floating scarf of muslin close.
