Sie stellen im Gestein eingebettete, mehr oder weniger mineralisirte 1) Reste von Thieren und Pflanzen dar, welche zur Zeit der Bildung der betreffenden Schichten lebten und von dem sich bildenden Sediment umschlossen wurden.
