Allein bei nicht weni en Völkern wird in den verschiedenen Geburtsperioden mit den ituatiqnen gewechselt. Die natürlichen Geberden und freiwilligen Bewegungen der gebärenden Frauen scheinen von selbst darauf aufmerksam zu machen dass in der That die verschiedenen Abschnitte des Gebäractes ein verschiedenes Verhalten hinsichtlich der Lage und Stellung erfordern. Leider findet man nicht immer in den Reiseberichten genauer angegeben, ob bei den Völkern in ganz bestimmten Geburtmerioden gewisse Haltungen und Stellungen angenommen werden. In der Regel notiren die Reise berichte nur diejenige Stellung welche in der Zeit des Durchtritts des Kindes gewählt wird.

Allein nicht blos in der Türkei und in Griechenland, sondern auch in Palästina benutzen die Hebammen noch jetzt nach Tobler's Bericht einen Geburtsstuhl. In J af f a hat derselbe einen halb mondförmigen Sitzausschnitt. Der Missionär Robson sagt, dass zu Damascus in Syrien, wo er sich 20 Jahre lang aufhielt, im Besitz der Hebamme sich stets ein Geburtsstuhl mit Sitzausschnitt befindet, auf welchen jede Gebärende gesetzt wird: „the woman is seated in a large arm-chair having a semicircular piece cut out of the middle of the front of the seat (dublin quart. Journ. Of med. Se. 1865. Febr. P. Der ehem. K. Preuss. Consul Herr Dr. Rosen in Jerusalem schrieb mir von dort: „die Hebammen in Jerusalem gebrauchen noch jetzt den Geburtsstuhl, wie sonst. Die Bauern hin gegen lassen die Gebärenden sich auf ein Kissen oder auf einen Stein setzen. Vielleicht kamen die Frauen der Israeliten in Aegypten während der Gefangenschaft der Juden auch schon auf Steinen sitzend nieder. Dies würde für später zu erörternde Fragen von Bedeutung sein. H. J. Von Türk wurde in Jerusalem zu einer samari tanischen Dame gerufen, welche in einem „altmodischen Lehn stuhl niederkam; er bemerkt hierzu, dass der Lehnstuhl, der bei anderen Gelegenheiten nur höchst selten gebraucht wird, ihm schon genügend andeuten musste, dass es sich hier um eine Entbindung handele (j. J. Sachs', Med. Almanach f. 1839.
